Small Space Interior Design: Brian D’souza’s apartment in Boston
We brought you Brian’s home as a part of the stylish home contest, a while ago. Here, we share his story on designing and decorating a 500 sft apartment in Boston.
As you will see, Brian has created a wonderful home with much love and care. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did !
For the past 24 years I’ve lived in the US, working in advertising and marketing. As much as I love America, in May, I packed four suitcases and moved to Goa.
I needed a change, as I was at a point in my life where I wanted to experience something different.
I also wanted to spend time with my father who turns 82 this year. Besides seeking adventure, I like going to museums, enjoy art, running, watching old Hollywood movies and love being around people that have a passion for something.
My goal was to make my apartment a home that was livable and comfortable. The first thing I did was to get rid of things I didn’t need or want. People tend to collect a lot of ‘stuff’, and I was no exception. I realised a lot of what we have we can probably do without. I donated what I no longer needed or wanted to charity.
Next, to make the place livable I decided to create ‘zones’- areas where I could rest, work, read and entertain.
This not only helped me organise what I had, but also helped me stay neat, because now everything had a place.
I love to read and created this little nook for me to settle in with a good book especially on a rainy day.
Finally, I wanted this apartment to be a home and a reflection of my personality.
By looking at your books, your artwork, your colour choices, a visitor should be able to read something about you. I picked out a palette of my favorite colours.
Throughout my home you will see browns and whites with small accents of blue, orange and green. I also prominently display my artwork and collections, as I feel it is these little things that we buy or things we keep and treasure that say a lot about us.
