India Design Blog: Sarmishta Roy: Ethnically Chic Gharonda
My blog, ‘Ethnically chic’, is a little nook where I share my love and passion for the abundance of colour found in every aspect of my life.Whether it is my home or the places I visit .It is all about my experiments in making a house into a home. An everyday adventure, which starts with DIY projects, and moves on to decorating with an addition of a plant or a colorful pillow and finding a place to display a long coveted artefact. My sense of style would be predominantly ethnic with a touch of modern. I think a home should be comfortable and filled with simple things that bring joy to us.
I am a stay-at-home mom to a ten year old daughter and a true Bengali at heart. I have been living in the US for over a decade now, but a huge chunk of my heart is still in India and would most likely be there forever.
I discovered decorating blogs while searching for Indian decor ideas. Here, I chanced upon Rang Decor and was enchanted by Archana’s interior design blog. Hopping from one link to the other, I soon discovered many more interesting blogs .Each blog stood out from the other in presentation, style and design ideas. It became a routine habit for me to grab a cup of tea in the morning and head straight to the computer to browse all my favourite bookmarked blogs.
I would read all their posts and leave a comment here and there. Eventually, I gathered enough courage to start my own blog. This would not have been possible without the kind words and encouragement of a few of my blogger friends. So yes, all those wonderful and gorgeous blogs out there has been my main source of inspiration to start my own adventure and rediscover my passion for interior design which I believe is a great outlet of positive energy.
Though I am relatively new to the blogging world, my journey so far has been fabulous. I started my blog in the month of April 2011 and in these short few months I have made many lovely friends. I look forward to their visits every time I put up a new post .The footprints left behind by them make my day☺.I learn new things every day. I am surprised at myself and my capabilities. Every day, I try to learn new things and share them with everyone. One such thing I discovered and learnt is Warli art from Maharashtra.
The reciprocation I get makes my learning all the more charming.
I look forward to many such years of shared ideas.
My tips and ideas on decorating
Here are some ways to liven a home, especially for people with constraints or those living in rented homes.
*Bring in colourful wall art. Framed paintings in a riot of colours add enough glamour to any dull mundane wall.
*Indoor plants. Green foliage is such a soothing element of decor. Most indoor houseplants are low maintenance .Placed in decorative holders and pots their contribution to decor is of great value.
*Decorative pillows are a work of art these days. Changing them with every season brings an instant makeover to a room.
*Coffee tables are another element in a room that can have a huge impact on our decor. As we enter a living room our attention is always drawn toward the coffee table. Some interesting vignettes placed on top as well as at the bottom are a sure way to add a lot of interest.
*A colourful rug of choice is another way to draw the eye toward the floor if the walls are plain.
I love to read
There are two online magazines I refer to for my inspirational fix.
1. Prismma. It is an extremely interesting space where we find various ideas on decorating as well as information on so many fabulous enterprises. An awesome platform to meet so many talented people.(http://www.prismma.in)
2. Houzz is another online magazine where we get to see some lovely homes and ideas. (http://www.houzz.com/)
Travel and photography are my other passions.
The urge to see discover new places and the excitement it brings is indescribable. Photography was a hobby I picked up as a result of my passion for travel, and the need to capture those special moments in my life. No blog or memories exist without taking a few good pictures. I have recently started a travel blog http://sroyapostcard.blogspot.com/ and am quite thrilled about this new adventure.
