Hanging pictures is an art indeed – if done properly, will enhance the beauty of the artwork as well as the overall space; if done inaccurately will ruin the effect, on the other hand.

Before driving a nail/nails into the wall, try to visualise the artwork on the wall. This will save you a lot of time and unnecessary hassle (patching up damaged walls) in the long run. A teeny weenie frame (picture) on a large wall will certainly look out of place. In this case a group of pictures will do the trick, or you may opt for a single large piece.

To help you visualise the overall effect on the wall, arrange the pictures on a large table or on the floor. Try out various arrangements/placements before you decide on the final arrangement. For and narrow walls or walls that are not too wide, vertical grouping in a row of small pictures is a good idea. Vertical arrangements gives the impression of high walls and high ceilings. One long picture or a couple of long and narrow pictures will also suit this type of walls. To create an illusion of wide walls, horizontal arrangement is helpful. Asymmetrical grouping adds interest, while symmetry gives a balanced and formal look. For stairwells, staggered or diagonal arrangements are suitable.

Different types of artwork may be tied together in a group arrangement by framing them in a similar manner. This way, even varied themes (pictures) can co-exist in harmony. Similar type of pictures in frames of various shapes and sizes, when grouped together, also looks good.
