False Ceiling Companies in India

ceiling design FALSE CEILING3

A false ceiling is defined as a secondary ceiling, hung below the main (structural) ceiling. It is also referred to as dropped ceiling, T-bar ceiling, suspended ceiling, grid ceiling, drop out ceiling, or ceiling tiles and is a staple of modern construction and architecture in both residential and commercial applications. Basically it is a second ceiling concealing the original. False ceilings, differ from standard ceilings as they hang closer to the ground beneath the original ceiling structure. There is usually a hollow space between the original ceiling and false ceiling. A false ceiling usually hangs a few inches from the roof, but some lie as much as a foot below the original ceiling structure.

Among the many elements, false ceiling is one which adds vocabulary in interior design. Effective building design requires balancing multiple objectives, such as aesthetics, environmental factors and integration with building infrastucture, hence the need arises for false ceilings for better accoustics, aeshetics, ambience, lighting, covering service lines and for better environmental impacts.

Dropped ceilings and ceiling tiles were being used in Japan for aesthetic reasons, as early as the Muromachi period (1337 – 1573 ). In 1596, Blackfriar Theatre in London, built it to aid acoustics. Initially modern dropped ceilings were built using interlocking tiles, and the only way to provide access for repair or inspection, was to begin removing the tiles from the edge and then reinstated, which was time consuming and expensive. In 1958, Donald A.Brown, invented suspended ceiling, in which access was obtained at any desired location.

Modern dropped ceilings were initially created to hide building infrastructure, including piping, wiring, ductwork, and also to hide problems such as structural damage. Further drop out ceilings also conceal sprinkler systems, while still providing full fire suppression functionality.

For many years, dropped ceilings were made of basic white tiles, but modern innovation now offer a plethora of options in sizes, colours, materials, visual effects, shapes, patterns and textures. Custom runs of speciality ceiling tiles can also be done at relatively lower cost than in the past.

The many advantages of false ceilings are that it hides ductings and ugly structural members, provides insulation from heat, acoustical improvement, as a design element to create various shapes and curves, fire safety, anti microbial performance, light reflectance ( ceiling that reflects more light can reduce lighting costs ), accomodate lighting systems, hide ugly trusses, sound proofing rooms, improve air conditioning.

Although cheap and relatively efficient, false ceilings have number of disadvantages, and one obvious drawback is that they reduce the overall size of a room and can create a cramped and claustrophobic feel. Another worrying aspect is that pests can start breeding. Accoustical tiles are also prone to decay over time and suspended ceilings need replacement every few years. False ceilings can also be prone to water stains and damage due to excess moisture in the atmosphere.
